The Green Walker Family

Green Walker was born in Georgia in 1826 and married Lucinda McDonald born on September 14,1847 in Irwin County, Georgia. The parents of both Green and Lucinda McDonald Walker are unknown.

First records for Green & Lucincda are those of the 1850 Federal cenus. On August 31, 1850, the enumerator recorded Green Walker age 24 and Lucinda Walker age 19 living in Lowndes County, Georgia. Green is listed as being a farmer and was born in Georgia. The children listed are Rachel age 3; Mary age 1 and Amanda age 1 (believed to be twins).

Green and Lucinda are next found in the Lowndes County GA 1860 census with the following children in the household: Rachel age 12: Mary age 11; Levina age 9; John age 7; William age 6; Archibald age 4; Johnathan age 3; Andrew age 2; and Nancy 3/12. Listed in the 1850 census but missing from the 1860 census, is Amanda who apparently died between 1850 and 1860. Green, age 33 and Lucinda, age 28, were recorded on July 4 1860, the date of the census, in the 6th district in Irwin County. Once again he is listed as farmer and born in Georgia as is Lucinda also. Property is valued at one hundred dollars.

Green Walker was a private in Co. F, 49th Regiment, Georgia Volunteer Infantry, Army of Northern Virginia , CSA. He was captured May 6, 1864 during the Battles of the Wilderness in Virginia. He was imprisoned at the infamous Union prison camp at Elmira, New York; also know as "Hellmira". He died there on September 14, 1864 of chronic diarrahea; a condition that claimed many Confederate defenders. He is buried in Elmira's Woodlawn National Cemetery, grave #265.
